What are Stem Cells?

Thursday, November 24th, 2011

Stem cells can be defined as unspecialized cells that have the ability to self regenerate and the ability to differentiate into other cells. Commonly these cells originate from two main sources that are mentioned below:

  1. Embryos formed during the blastocyst phase of embryological development (embryonic stem cells)
  2. Adult tissue (adult stem cells)

Both the types of cells are characterized by their potential or potency to differentiate into different type of cells. (like muscle, skin, bone, etc)

Potency:

Stem cells can be categorized by their potential difference into other types of cells. Embryonic stem cells are the most potent cells as these can become every type of cells present in our body. The classification is as follows:

  • Totipotent: It’s the ability of the cells to differentiate into different types of cells. For example; the zygote formed at egg fertilization and the first few cells that are formed from the division of zygote.
  • Multipotent: It is the ability of the cells to differentiate into a closely related family of cells. For example- hematopoietic (adult) stem cells which becomes red and white blood cells or platelets.
  • Pluripotent: The cells can differentiate into different cell types. For example- embryonic cells and stem cells that are derived from the endoderm, mesoderm and ectoderm germ layers, which are formed at the beginning of embryonic stem cell differentiation formation.
  • Obligopotent- The ability of the cells to differentiate into few cells. Example -lymphoid or myeloid stem cells.
  • Unipotent – It is the ability of the cells to produce cells of their own type but also have the property of self renewal that is required to be labeled as stem cells. Examples-  (adult) muscle stem cells.

Among all the stem cells, embryonic cells are considered as pluripotent instead of totipotent. This is so because they can not become a part of the extra-embryonic membranes or the placenta.

Implementing adult education is necessary to reduce teen pregnancy

Friday, November 4th, 2011

Teen age pregnancy is a troubling issue for many countries since last two decades. According to a data; collected over teenage pregnancy; India is the third last country where 74 out of every thousand teenage get pregnant before becoming an adult. Girls here are either forced into marriage and motherhood at the tender age of 14-15 or willfully indulge in unsafe relationships.

The government says it can do no more except condemning such practices; for without the help of parents and teachers; who alone can broaden sex and relationship education in teenagers, every step to reduce it would be in vain.

Continuous denial of the issue by people is not eliminating it; rather rates of suicides, honor killings and ignominy are coming up. Families may deny adult education at schools; but they are constantly running at the hovering risk of their teenage daughter becoming pregnant. What’s ironically sad; is that families in India are ok with killing their teenagers in case they get involve in pre-marital relationship resulting into pregnancy but are condemning grown-up education in syllabus. How better is it; to indulge in honor killing to deal with teenage pregnancy? Or, is it worth killing instead of educating over adult issues?

Truth remains that with uncensored exposure of sex on television and cinema; risk of teenagers going derelict is rapidly increasing. It is important to guide students about what is right and what is not.  A great number of teenage pregnancies can be reduced if only schools and parents pay heed to education system that current scenario is demanding for. Stats have it; on average, young people have sex for the first time at about age 17. This means that young adults are at increased risk of unwanted pregnancy.

A psychologist explains: teen age is an age of curiosity, mostly for the forbidden issues. Teenagers seek answers; in countries where these issues are considered taboo; they fail to get them and go for amoral ways to find them out themselves. It is not then our own misleading as parents and teachers? Is it not our duty to help teenagers to procure right approach towards an issue so sensitive? It is important to teach teenagers; their options, because it’s not only pregnancy but also several STD’s that they risk themselves on.
