CORD BLOOD STEM CELLS MILESTONES: CURE FOR DIABETES?

A team of South Korean researchers by Prof. Kang Kyung-sun of Seoul National University successfully led grown pancreatic beta cells from umbilical cord blood stem cells from newborns. The stem cells are able to secrete insulin, the hormone necessary for the treatment of diabetes. The differentiating ability of stem cells from umbilical cord blood, modify, or in other types of cells in the body, a new discovery that has great promise for improving the treatment of some of the most widespread diseases is valid including diabetes. This benefit would be of the biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications, the US-based weekly highlights, with pioneering work in the field of biotechnology documents.

Similar breakthroughs have been achieved by scientists around the world. Researchers at the University of Newcastle, in Dublin, produced a "mini-liver" stem cells from cord blood. The technology will be developed to provide a full-size, fully functioning liver. Tissue of mini-livers be used to test new drugs. The researchers are confident that within five years, part of the fabric used to repair damaged liver, and within 15 years, the actual liver transplants are carried out are made from cord blood with lab-grown liver. This is a remarkable achievement that may be able to develop treatments for liver disease.

In a study by the University of Minnesota was published, the researchers discovered that umbilical cord blood cells have some properties similar to primitive Stem cells. By Walter Low, Ph.D., lead investigator of the study and professor of neurosurgery and Stem Cell Institute at the University of Minnesota, this important discovery is important to understand how stem cells from cord blood can restore brain function after injury, as in stroke patients. In a laboratory test to have cord blood stem cells in rodents transplanted with controlled strokes. The results: some partial function was restored and the reduced size of the lesions in the brain. Cord blood stem cells developed into neuron-type cells, similar to those found in the brain. In addition, stimulates nerve fibers in the brain, so that the feature back in the rat. This finding will contribute significantly to the development of stroke research.

Stem cell technology has been advancing in big leaps us. The breakthroughs in cord blood stem cells can significantly accelerate the development of therapies for life-threatening disease and disability Terms. Cord blood stem cells prevents most of the controversies and problems associated with research on embryonic stem cells
